Join us this January for our next traditional afternoon tea, served January to March 2026.
Welcome in the New Year with An Earnest Afternoon Tea, the sandwiches themselves are a moral test, cucumber must be sliced thinly enough to suggest effort, yet thickly enough to imply abundance. Jack’s tarragon chicken is dependable and reassuring, while Algernon’s ham and cucumber is indulgent enough to suggest he has eaten several already. Anything involving tuna is a scandal and should be discussed only in whispers, if at all.
The savoury tier follows, because balance is essential if one wishes to avoid scandal. Worthing’s country leek and potato soup offers comfort and propriety in equal measure, while Miss Prism’s mini quiche is both neat and quietly impressive.
Then comes the moment everyone has been pretending not to anticipte: the sweet slate. Cecily’s poetry scones arrive warm and generous, accompanied by clotted cream and jam, encouraging lively debate about which should go first (a matter best settled by doing both). The Earnest hidden identity lemon drizzle reveals itself gradually. Bunburry’s blueberry muffin is entirely unnecessary yet completely irresistible, and the creme patissiere profiterole of earnest intentions proves that good resolutions are always best served with cream.
Naturally, all of this would be meaningless without Aunt Augusta’s Tea Selection. From her forthright Earl Grey to Lady Bracknell’s robust English Breakfast, Miss Prism’s calming peppermint to Gwendolin’s refined green tea, each cup reveals something of one’s character.
